ABOUT Hélène's Art

In reference to a conversation about being artistically blocked, someone once told me that, "Art is everywhere." As simple of a statement, it really helped me to open my eyes. I AM very interested in many things - atypical subjects such as birds, fields, trees, and skies but what I am most interested in is creating an opportunity for the viewer to participate in the "telling" of an image - its story, its meaning, where it brings them in their own personal lives, of sentimentality, of loss, love.  I like to think that my paintings are poetic and lately I have been more interested in saying more with less. And more than anything, the act of painting, of developing an idea, or a series of works keeps me grounded spritiually and physically.  This is where I am most me

My artworks take form mostly in paint - encaustic (pigmented and developed beeswax), oil, gouache, watercolor, and in mixed media - oil pastel, charcoal, and a combination of all the above, and using supports such as canvas, panel, and handmade paper.

I also play in creating artist books, short stories and poems integrated into paintings, and a small amount of sculptural ceramics.

ABOUT Hélène

Hélène's studio is housed within Cerulean Fine Art Gallery & Artist Studios in downtown Hallowell, Maine. She is a working, professional artist who has maintained her artistic and professional business for almost ten years.  Hélène divides her time between running Cerulean (curating & installing exhibitions, teaching private lessons, teaching classes and workshops working with other artists, and so on) with business partner Janna, to working in her studio and maintaining her own "Hélène Farrar Art" Business, creating graphic design works for private clients, and at home, a Mom and Wife.  She lives just over the hill from Cerulean with Husband Stan, Toddler Daughter Olympia, Dog Sophie, and three goldfish.

Hélène has an M.F.A. in Interdisciplinary Arts from Goddard College and a B.A. in Studio Art from the University of Maine. She is represented by the Three Graces Gallery of Portsmouth, New Hampshire and Cerulean Fine Art Gallery of Hallowell, Maine. Hélène's work is well-known across the state, as she has exhibited far and wide from the Clown Gallery in Stonington to the Cooper Jackson Gallery in Portland, ME.  She is on the faculty of both the University of Maine at Augusta and Thomas College where she teaches an array of courses from Intro. to Graphic Design to Drawing I.  She is a certified Professional Art Teacher by the State of Maine and taught in the public and private schools for over eight years.
